NEW: ‘Oswald the Lucky Rabbit’ Returns for Disney 100 Years of Wonder
In some exciting news, Walt Disney Animation released an “all-new hand drawn” short of none other than classic Disney character ‘Oswald the Lucky Rabbit’! We’re seeing Oswald for the first time in almost 95 years, and he’s looking better than ever.
First appearing in 1927, Walt Disney and his associate Ub Iwerks premiered a short titled ‘Poor Papa’. “‘Poor Papa’ showed Oswald struggling through the first stages of rabbit fatherhood. Oswald is subjected to the creative mayhem and chaos of raising thirty bunny babies, one classic yet clever gag after another.” (WDW Magazine). Following the rejection of that idea by Universal, Oswald was next seen in ‘Trolley Troubles’, an idea which propelled Oswald in the hearts of audiences. After some “shady business dealings” by Charles Mintz (the producer), Walt was forced to hand over rights to Oswald to Universal. It was not until CEO Bob Iger made it his mission in 2005 that Disney was able to gain back the rights to Oswald. Another big accomplishment we can thank Bob Iger for!
Today, we are delighted to share that ‘Oswald the Lucky Rabbit’ is back in a short to honor the Disney 100 Years of Wonder celebration! @DisneyAnimation shared the short in a tweet that can be seen below:
