Judge Allows Big Win In Court for Walt Disney Company Against Sex Pistols Frontman’s Wishes
‘Whatever Disney Does, It Is Doing It Without John’s Approval…’
In a resounding win for FX who is now a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company, a high court judge has granted favor to a suit filed by Sex Pistols bandmates against their lead member, John Lydon. Lydon is best know as his stage name, Johnny Rotten, and has argued that contrary to a 1998 agreement who’s origin date isn’t known, the band has for over 23 years made decisions about their name, band, music, etc. unanimously.
The argument stems from a recent project picked up by FX entitled ‘Pistols’ which is set to feature the band’s popular tracks and lyrics as well as borrow part of their collective name. Bandmates Steve Cook and Paul Jones were in favor of moving forward with allowing the project use of their music whereas Lydon was not so easily quick to concede. His disfavor caused for reason to be brought before a high court judge where the judge ruled that Lydon’s grounds for argument- including hearsay that not being in unanimous favor over allowing acclaimed show ‘The Crown’ use of the band’s music resulted in them being removed from plans for that show- were “implausible.”
Lydon took to his website to express his disappointment in the ruling saying, “It is so destructive to what the band is and so I fear that the whole project might be extremely negative. How can anyone think that this can proceed without consulting me and deal with my personal life in this, and my issues in this, without any meaningful contact with me before the project is announced to the world. I don’t think there are even words that I can put forward to explain quite how disingenuous this is. As I said in the lyrics of ‘The Order of Death,’ This is what you want, this is what you get…”
Is this enough to sway general interest in the upcoming project set to premiere with FX? Will this affect your decision to tune in to the show? Leave us your thoughts in the comments.
