Bob Iger Shares Thoughts on Gun Control at Sandy Hook Event

It has been 10 years since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Yesterday, the Sandy Hook Promise Benefit took place in New York City, honoring those who lost their lives that day. Well-known as an advocate of gun control, Bob Iger spoke at the Benefit. Joining him in speaking out about gun violence were President Barack Obama and Matthew McConaughey. The three men spoke out about gun violence, the importance of youth prevention policies, and how to empower youth through education.

Speaking at the Benefit, Iger shared his thoughts:

As a grandfather, as a father, as CEO of The Walt Disney Company, I believe there is no greater or more important task than ensuring the safety and well-being of our children… Those of us who are in positions to affect change, whether it’s by influencing laws of shaping culture or supporting organizations on the frontlines, I think we have an extra responsibility.

For Iger’s support over the years of the Sandy Hook Promise Organization, he was recognized with an award. Speaking at the event to WABC-TV NY, Iger shared additional comments about the importance of helping children feel safe in school:

As the President in Office at the time of the tragedy, Obama shared his thoughts about the passage of gun control legistation during this time in his Presidency:

“Perhaps the most bitter disappointment of my time in office, the closest I came to being cynical, was the utter failure of Congress to respond in the immediate aftermath of the Sandy Hook shootings. To see almost the entire GOP, but also a decent number of Democrats equivocate and hem and haw and filibuster and ultimately bend yet again to pressure from the gun lobby.” (Breitbart)

Actor and activist Matthew McConaughey spoke at the Benefit as well, sharing he believes that “it’s time that we start selling, evangelizing and celebrating prevention” of school shootings. McConaughey has become more vocal recently after the Ulvade school shooting, Ulvade being his hometown.

Sandy Hook Promise, a non profit organization, was founded as a result of the tragedy Sandy Hook Elementary School. The organization is “led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Based in Newtown, Connecticut, our intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning our tragedy into a moment of transformation. By empowering youth to “know the signs” and uniting all people who value the protection of children, we can take meaningful actions in schools, homes, and communities to prevent gun violence and stop the tragic loss of life.”
